Towards the end of August, I was putting some laundry away when I realized no matter how much I organized I felt claustrophobic and felt like my room never looked neat. That’s when I realized every single drawer, every closet space, every nook and cranny in my room was filled to the max. I needed to unclutter and deep clean my entire living space. Now I can’t speak for anyone else, but I personally know I get overwhelmed easily and I need to take tasks in small measurements to be able to complete them. So, in this article, I will share with you the steps I took to declutter, clean, and organize my room to make it the Zen atmosphere it is today.
I started my mission on a Monday and committed myself every day after work to zone focus on only one section at a time no more no less. I chose to start with my closet and work myself to the drawers. For my clothes, it was very simple If I had not worn them in over 4 years get rid of them! I know it’s tempting to save your skinny jeans for when you snatch back or that blouse that reminds you of Friday college nights but if you have not worn it in a few years it’s safe to say you never will. That’s not to say you won’t ever snatch that waist or won’t find a cuter blouse but it is time to stop holding on to clothes that do not suit you even if you are still the same size, you were 4 years ago you have evolved and so has your taste in fashion its likely the outfits you are holding on it the most aren’t even in anymore.
This is the key to starting and finishing your tasks. Many years ago, I had a company come out and install a customized closet. So, in my closet, I have a section for each clothing item; dresses, pants, blouses, shoes, and bags. I started with the section I knew was the easiest and worked myself through each section leaving the hardest one for last. I started with the dresses I went by age (how long I’ve had the dress for) style (we are not wearing any peplum dresses in 2023) and fit, simple if it doesn’t fit get rid of it! You can find a cute dress that will fit you currently and complement your shape. I then proceeded to my blouse, pants, and so on with the same method. When I was done with my entire closet I then proceeded to my drawers. I set my focus on only one drawer at a time. I went through the same process I began with my easiest drawer and made myself to my hardest drawer last.
Items such as makeup and jewelry are a little different when deciding what to get rid of and what to keep. Jewelry tends to last forever unless you’re like me and you have a lot of costume jewelry. It’s very simple first look at the condition of your jewelry is it old? Is it Rusty? Is it turning green? If your answer is yes to any of these questions it’s probably not in the best condition and it’s time to get rid of it. Now what to do when you come across jewelry that’s in great condition? Well, think about it like this they are called accessories they are meant to accessorize your outfit. So, think about your current clothing in your closet. Are these pieces of jewelry still in style? Do I have anything left in my closet that will match it? If your answer is no get rid of it you can never have too much jewelry and I guarantee you will buy more. Now when it comes to make-up, it’s very important that anything over a year you get rid of its that simple. These are the products that go on your skin, hygiene is extremely important. There is no point in having a beat face if you have beaten skin. Any open foundations, concealers, moisturizers, primers, and frequently used eyeshadows that are a year older throw it away.
I guarantee that if you follow these steps thoroughly, you will find yourself in a much more relaxing and spacious atmosphere. The amount of room that I now have is unbelievable, I have space in my closet I can actually see all my clothes neatly and not crammed up against each other. All my drawers are so organized I find everything in my room with such ease and overall, it looks better. You have to work with the space you have if you’re someone who doesn’t have a big bedroom or a big apartment or house you want to be as comfortable as possible. The worst part about living in a small space is it being cluttered and crowded so be smart on how to organize try buying storage bins for the top of your closet and dividers for your drawers. Not only will your space look better after taking these steps but you will feel better and so will your mental health.
Wow! Great idea taking one section at a time!!😎
